"It is not that life ashore is distasteful to me. But life at sea is better." Those words, attributed to Sir Francis Drake, Sea Captain, oversimplify one of the many reasons why we own boats. Are boats a wise investment? Not exactly. Real estate or the stock market are probably better places for your hard earned dollars. Why do we do it then? Simply because it is enjoyable to be out on your boat fishing, sailing, being with friends and family, discovering new areas, or, as noted in The Wind In The Willows:
"Believe me, my young friend," said the Water Rat solemnly, "there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats...simply messing...nothing seems to matter, that's the charm of it...
Whether you get away, or whether you don't, whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular..."
We at Poulsbo Yacht Club will have been messing around in boats for 60 years as of next spring. Our facilities are top notch due to the busy efforts of our volunteers who almost exclusively handle all operations of our club. We sail, motor, cruise, meet, instruct, and have fun - a lot. If you love boating, we'd love to have you join us. That said, I'm ready to cast off. As Captain Ron says, "If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there!"
